This photograph was taken at the Marabastad bus terminal between 1st and 3rd Streets and intersected by Mogul Street. The busses of the Motla Bus Service can be seen in the background. The couple in the foreground appear to be engaged in a business transaction buying and selling beer. At the time, in terms of the law, only whites were allowed to buy alcohol at 'bottle stores'. Alternative ways of trading in bottled beer, in particular, were devised. Social venues known as Shebeens, where illegal drink was sold, thrived in all the townships. A women can be seen carrying a heavy load on her head—a less common sight on the streets of present day Marabastad.
